From all the trade shows and markets that I've been to this year, I am seeing a trend. The Moroccan style rug is definitely making a big entrance into the design of area rugs this year. Enjoy the photos below and looking forward to your feedback.

I have seen many interesting rug layouts that I have not personally tried.  The rug layering concept is basically placing  two different rug constructions types, or two colors, one on top of the other, each one complementing the other. I have seen this with a natural fiber rug on the bottom such as a sisal or another natural weave, and on top of that a natural cowhide, in it's natural cow shape. Rug layering can also be done around a bed, by placing runners on the sides and one in front. The rugs will overlap each other at the ends, with this theme I would stick to the same rug for all three sides. Another concept is mixing and matching two rugs in one room, this can have the same effect as placing a room divider without closing up the space. So you will have the sitting area in one part of the room and a dining area in the other part of the room. You can be simple and use the same style and construction or get really creative with complementing patterns and or colors. For a hallway runner instead of a standard long runner going down the full length of the hallway, try placing many smaller rugs with a gap in between. If you are really dearing you can mix it up with different patterns of colors. 5/22/14- See below for our first layering install just completed! It's a Yerra jet black square cowhide patchwork rug on top of wall to wall animal print carpet. I think it looks great! Jet black cowhide rug on top of animal print wall to wall carpet

Here I will go through the most popular rug construction methods, I will post another about the different materials. I'll start at the top and work down from there. Hand Knotted Rug Hand knotted: This is a method that has been around for hundreds of years, each fiber is actually knotted by hand. Sometimes there are many weavers working on one rug at the same time. This is a slow and auderous process. It can take a week to complete a few inches. Total time to construct an average size rug can take a few months. The result is a stunning highly detailed heirloom quality carpet that lasts literally forever. There is almost no shedding present. There is an entire market dedicated to antique rugs. Even within hand knotted rugs there are different qualities, the defining factor is how many knots per inch. Higher qualities have 400 kpi lower is in the 100-200 range. You can tell a hand knotted rug by looking at the backside, you will see the design of the rug, whereas in most other construction methods you will see a canvas backing. Hand Tufted Rug Hand tufted: Like hand knotted this is also done by hand. The only difference is, this is not knotted, the stands are placed in a canvas using a handheld tool. Construction is much quicker. The result is a highly detailed good quality rug. The price is significantly less than a hand knotted due to much less labor and cheaper materials are used is many hand tufted rugs. One major issue is you will see a lot of shedding in the first few months. This will subside over time. A hand tufted rug can last between 8-14 years in a regular traffic area. Machine Made Rug Machine made: A machine made rug can be fabricated in a few hours. Many machine made rugs are made out of poly or nylon which further reduces the pricing. Origins are from the Far East, Belgium India and the good old USA. Like they say you get what you pay for. A machine made rug is usually not worth getting professionaly cleaned and are therefore replaced after about 4-5 years. You can opt for a indoor outdoor rug that can be hosed down, or if it's a smaller size, throw it in the washing machine! Make sure to turn off the spin cycle. Of course no manufacturer would recommend that, but if your options are washing or replacing give it a shot.

This is question number one when looking for an area rug.  I always say rather spend your dollars on the right size rug rather then going for a higher quality carpet.  A rug that is to small will clutter your room as if there were an added piece of furniture in there instead  of enhancing your decor. As a rule of thumb the larger the rug the larger the room will appear, of course there are exceptions to every rule.  The rooms below are roughly the same size. You can clearly see how a small rug placed in the middle of this living room clutters up the room, whereas the rug in the second photo makes the room appear much larger.
